With Tim Cook's 1 Million Inauguration Donation, Big Tech Sends Warm Wishes to Trump
Axios reported on Friday that Apple CEO Tim Cook will donate 1 million to Donald Trump's inauguration, the latest tech company figure to do so. These donations--which aren't covered by campaign finance law and can be unlimited--signal a clear willingness to work with the Trump administration and a desire to curry favor with the once and future president. The tech sector is particularly eager to suck up. In December, Meta and Amazon donated 1 million to the inauguration committee, and OpenAI's Sam Altman said he planned to do the same. Uber and its CEO Dara Khosrowshahi have both donated 1 million apiece (even as the company's chief legal officer Tony West is vice president Kamala Harris' brother-in-law).

Span-Oriented Information Extraction -- A Unifying Perspective on Information Extraction
Ding, Yifan, Yankoski, Michael, Weninger, Tim
Information Extraction refers to a collection of tasks within Natural Language Processing (NLP) that identifies sub-sequences within text and their labels. These tasks have been used for many years to link extract relevant information and to link free text to structured data. However, the heterogeneity among information extraction tasks impedes progress in this area. We therefore offer a unifying perspective centered on what we define to be spans in text.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk says Apple CEO Tim Cook snubbed possible Tesla acquisition 'during the darkest days'
Tesla CEO Elon Musk said Tuesday that Apple CEO Tim Cook refused to meet with him about a possible acquisition of his electric vehicle company when it was in dire straits. His claim came after the publication of a Reuters report that Apple is developing electric vehicle technology that could result in the production of a car for consumers or self-driving vehicle systems for automakers. If any of that comes to fruition, Apple would be competing directly with Tesla. "During the darkest days of the Model 3 program, I reached out to Tim Cook to discuss the possibility of Apple acquiring Tesla (for 1/10 of our current value)," Musk said on Twitter. "He refused to take the meeting."

Apple CEO Tim Cook speaks Monday during the 2018 Apple Worldwide Developer Conference at the San Jose Convention Center. Apple CEO Tim Cook speaks Monday during the 2018 Apple Worldwide Developer Conference at the San Jose Convention Center. Tim Cook, who has led Apple since 2011, spoke with NPR's Steve Inskeep in a wide-ranging interview on Monday as the company kicked off its annual Worldwide Developers Conference. Steve Inskeep: Thank you very much for taking the time. This is really great to talk with you. Apple CEO Tim Cook: It is great to be here with you. I want to begin with some news that you made -- and by the time people will hear this interview we will have explained essentially what it was -- having to do with screen time and parental controls. I want to get at the thinking behind that: What, if anything, bothers you about the amount of time people are spending on your phones? If you back up and think about what we've -- what we're about -- we've never been about maximizing usage of our devices. It's never been a focus of ours. What we've always try to do is infuse humanity into our products, and give you something that amplifies something you want to do, or enables you to create something that you couldn't create otherwise. And it -- sort of to make your difference in the world.
